Creating a wedding mood board (also called a wedding vision board or wedding inspiration board) is maybe one of the most fun and creative aspects of wedding planning. It’s part collage, part to-do list, and all vibes.
What is a wedding mood board?
A wedding mood board is a visual tool used during wedding planning to curate, gather, and organize ideas and inspiration. A wedding mood board might be physical (i.e., a display board, poster board, or corkboard) or digital (a collection of digital images).
What goes on a wedding mood board?
Mood boards for weddings often include:
- Photographs (inspirational scenes or design elements; romantic couple moments you want to keep front of mind)
- Color swatches
- Sketches
- Fabric swatches
- Words (think “mood” words in big font: Romantic. Daydream. COZY!)
- Clippings from magazines
- Post-it notes with ideas, notes, etc.
When should you make a wedding mood board?
You can make a wedding inspiration board at any point during wedding planning. It can (and likely, will) evolve over the process of planning.
In the beginning stages of planning, when you’re still unsure of the overall theme or feel you want for your event, mood boards for weddings can be super helpful. As you curate the pictures, colors, and items you want on the board, you’re actually creating a loose outline of your ideal wedding.
As you move closer to the event, wedding mood boards often become more practical as well – especially since they’re often used to show vendors what you’re looking for.
I personally would keep the vision board as a creative tool and I think making a physical board is the most helpful (and fun). For organizing and sharing information with vendors, I would go with a user-friendly project management tool (like this wedding planner template on ClickUp, which is free). This makes it easy to keep everything (like vendor information, to-do lists, etc.) in one place and also to share an idea (or task) with your partner or vendor.
How do you use mood boards for weddings?
How you use and create the mood board is totally up to you. Some brides-to-be take a highly organized approach and may even have multiple boards to track various to-do lists and wedding-related projects (hey, Virgo brides!). Others may simply use the board for inspiration, collecting photos from the web of looks, possible must-haves, and random ideas, and posting them on post-its.
Creating a visual wedding mood board to capture how you want your wedding to look and feel can help you to manifest the wedding of your dreams. grab color swatches from your local hardware store to get an idea of your color scheme. Take photos (or grab them from the web) of cake ideas…decor ideas.. flowers..you name it!
This wood-framed linen board is functional and chic enough that you can definitely use it after your wedding, too- as a memory board, home office bulletin board, etc.
It comes with 20 pushpins but there are also some really cute pushpins to make your board extra special 🙂
How to Create a Wedding Mood Board: Bringing Your Daydream Wedding to Life
Planning a wedding can feel overwhelming with the endless inspiration available online. To stay focused and ensure your big day reflects your unique style, creating a wedding vision board is a must. This tool helps you organize ideas, define your aesthetic, and communicate your vision clearly to vendors and other people involved in planning. Here’s a simple guide to crafting a wedding mood board that will keep your planning on track (and keep you inspired 🙂
Step 1: Set Your Wedding Goals
Before gathering images, think about your overall vision. You and your partner should consider:
- What mood or vibe do we want? (e.g., romantic, boho, classic, modern, rustic, super simple)
- What are our must-have elements? (e.g., outdoor venue, specific flowers, cultural traditions)
- What colors do we love? What decor are we picturing?
- Are there any ideas- big or small- that have always been a part of our wedding vision?
Step 2: Gather Inspiration for Your Wedding Mood Board
Start collecting visuals that reflect your wedding goals. Use platforms like Pinterest and Instagram to find images of venues, color schemes, floral arrangements, decor, attire, and more. Save or pin anything that catches your eye—even if it’s not directly wedding-related. A photo of a sunset or a fabric swatch could spark ideas for your theme. You could also go to the hardware store to get your hands on those fun paint swatches, and go out and get some print wedding magazines (to me, there’s still nothing like flipping through the pages).
Step 3: Curate Your Favorites
Once you’ve gathered a variety of ideas, it’s time to narrow them down. Choose images that truly reflect your style and eliminate anything that feels out of place. Look for recurring themes in your selections—this will help identify your core aesthetic.
Step 4: Create Your Wedding Mood Board
You can create your vision board digitally or physically. You can also organize the board by sections (e.g., attire, decor, florals) to make it visually clear.
Step 5: Keep refining, finding inspiration, and use the board to share your vision with vendors.
Once your vision board is complete, share it (or pictures of it) with your wedding planner, florist, and other vendors. It will help them understand your style and execute your vision more accurately.
